Muar and Melaka Trip during CNY- Pt2

After the Muar trip we drove up to Melaka and checked in a 2 star hotel in Melaka Raya. As this was a last minute trip, those hotels we wanted to stay were all fully booked. After checking in, took a nap and shower we went to a friend name James's house. His Mom cooked a wonderful meals for us. It was not an authenthic Nyonya food, but Chinese cum Nyonya home cook food.....reminded me of my grandma's cooking有婆婆的味道。

Melaka was flooded with Singaporean and outstation cars. The traffic was slow around the Jonker Street area.
After all the visiting and well wishing, it was about 1.00am and we drove round Melaka Raya for something to eat (actually we were not hungry)and we spotted this :
These were what we ordered:

Extra fish balls:
We came to this place as most of the eating place was not opened and we saw a lot of people were eating here but the food was very disappointing. The fish balls were not fresh, I think the fish balls were not properly refrigerated. The noodles was so so only. According to my Melaka friend who operates a coffee shop nearby, said the owner of this restaurant had changed hand many times within two years......I guess I know why.
Luckily, the following day we had a chance to eat our favourite Melaka Hainanese Pork Satay in Kota Laksamana..........Sum May Heong Satay ( sorry no pictures.....too busy eating!).

Muar and Melaka Trip during CNY- Pt1

On the second day of CNY, my husband and I drove down to Muar and Melaka to visit some friends there. My husband's friend Eugene who is staying in Parit Jawa, a small fishing village about 15 minutes drive from Muar took us to this place to eat the specialities here.

Entrance to the village:

This is the restaurant we went....an attap hut facing the better Warong Makan built by the local town council. It was crowded. Actually behind this place, there are two better looking seafood restaurants. But Eugene brought us here. You can select type of seafood near the kitchen.Local favourite drinks, mine too....pineapple juice ( but in can lah!) According to Eugene, this is a rare fish.....just deep fried and eat with sambal chili provided.
This is stingray with preserved vegetable (Kiam Chai) and tamarind.
Sambal udang with petai.
This is the star of the restaurant...Assam Fish. According to Eugene, Assam Fish originated from this small little village. If you want extra gravy, you can ask at no extra charge. The fish is very fresh and full of tamarind pieces (assam keping) and shallots flavour. Unlike Penang or Melaka style of Assam Fish where chopped Bunga Kantan or Mint leaves are garnished, this Assam Fish lack of those but still taste good and it is not as sweet as the Penang or Melaka style, it is more sourish.

The fishing boat by the riverside.

All the dishes go so well with rice. It was so hot that day and we were eating spicy food...T-shirt, slippers, good food, good companions...it is kinda of good experience.

Tian Ya Ker Mushroom Noodles - 天涯客冬菇板面

I remember the first time I ate Pan Mee was made by my Mom who learnt from my Grandma (my father's side) some 30 years ago. That time Pan Mee was not available outside and usually is a home cook food by Hokkien people. Nowadays, Pan Mee stalls are everywhere and so many different varieties eg. Ma La Pan Mian, Dried Pan Mee, Spinach Pan Mee, Seafood Pan Mee, Tom Yam Pan Pee etc etc.

I decided to try this Tian Ya Ker Pan Mee behind Jalan Raja Laut even though there is one nice Pan Mee near my office and it is Sunday (i work on Sunday too!) why not, no jam and can find parking easily.

The Pan Mee signboard was attached here but this stall is selling Tauhu Bakar and Popiah. The Pan Mee Stall is inside.

Eating soup noodles be it Assam Laksa, Curry Laksa or Prawn Mee, must taste the soup base first. If the soup is not nice, you can forget about the whole bowl of mee. This pan mee soup is very tasty. I find the Noodle too soft, I prefer al dente. Lucky the fried shallot is not the mass produce type and lots of mushroom added.

Pan Mee (RM4.00)
I ordered a piece of Popiah (RM1.50) , not bad. I don't like those popiah with lots of crunchy stuff inside.
This Pan Mee only sell soup type no dried Pan Mee. The dipping chili sauce for pan mee was not good, there was a weird kind of smell in it. I still prefer the Kin Kin Pan Mee located further down the street epsecially the sambal chili there.
Nearby the Pan Mee stall is this Suanson Cake Shop famous for its Carrot Walnut Cake.
